Devalsari, Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand
Devalsari, nestled in the serene Aglar Valley of Tehri Garhwal district, is the traditional homeland of the Jaunpuri people. The snow-clad peaks of the Mahabharat range rise in the distance, framing a landscape of magnificent deodar, oak, and rhododendron forests interspersed with the terraced fields of Bangsil, Moldhar, Udarsu, and Tezu villages. The Pali Gad stream flows gently through Bangsil into the Aglar River, meandering through forests that range in elevation from 1,200 m at Thatyur to 3,048 m at Nag Tibba — the highest peak in the region. The ancient Shiva Temple at Devalsari, believed to have been built in the 1800s, stands gracefully amidst tall deodar trees, adding spiritual charm to this natural haven.
Since 2015, Titli Trust has been supporting a conservation and livelihood programme in Devalsari, Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, with funding assistance from ONGC. A dynamic local youth group — the Devalsari Paryavaran Sanrakshan awam Tekniki Vikas Samiti (DPSATVS) — led by Arun Prasad, has worked tirelessly over the past decade to protect Devalsari’s remarkable forests and biodiversity, while promoting nature-linked responsible tourism. The area is home to 210 species of birds, 165 species of butterflies, and more than 200 species of moths, in addition to bats, odonates, and many other forms of wildlife. Recognizing its rich ecological and cultural heritage, the local community has proposed that Devalsari be declared a Biodiversity Heritage Site. The society conducts its iconic Titli Utsav, annually, in the months of May or June. The 6thDevalsariTitli Utsav was held in June 2025.
