South Garo Hills

South Garo Hills, Meghalaya, the Abode of the Clouds beckon.

The home of the “Achik Mande” or the “hill people” as the Garos call themselves. Cascading hill forests, the whoops of the Hoolock Gibbons in the distance, the smell of fresh elephant dung on the ground, the musical chirps of the Olive Bulbul, and the ever-alluring butterflies. Come, experience all this and more in the Garo Hills….
The Balpakram-Baghmara Landscape covers an area of 600 sq. km including 220 sq. km of community owned forest and the protected areas of Balpakram National Park, Siju WLS, Baghmara Reserved Forest and Rewak Reserve Forest, with an
altitudinal range of 100-1,100 m
Beginning 2010, Titli Trust supported Samrakshan Trust to document bird, butterfly, moth and herpetofaunal diversity of South Garo Hills, and initiate nature-linked tourism. The South Garo Hills is home to 40 species of mammals, 325 species of birds, 380 species of butterflies, more than 500 species of moths, and 65 species of amphibians and reptiles. Youth groups at Siju and Karwani support nature linked tourism, and organize nature tours having hosted visitors to the Garo Hills for the past decade. A technical paper of Butterflies of Garo Hills, as well as a book, supported by Titli Trust, have helped establish Garo Hills as a butterfly hotspot in northeast India.
