Mawmluh, Cherrapunji, Meghalaya
Mawmluh village is located 7 km from Sohra (also known as Cherrapunji), the district capital of the East Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya. The Mawmluh Cave, the fourth longest cave in India, are located in this village. The International Union of Geological Sciences(IUGS) included the GSSP of the Meghalayan Stage in the Mawmluh Cave in its assemblage of 100 “geological heritage sites” in the world. The Mawmluh village is surrounded by excellent community forests, teeming with biodiversity.
Titli Trust is supporting the Mawmluh village to initiate nature-linked livelihoods by building capacity of local youth as nature guides, by reducing hunting, documenting local biodiversity, curating and establishing nature trails. This project, supported by Royal Enfield (Social Mission) since 2022, hopes to move away from the mass tourism model, largely adopted in Cherrapunji landscape, through niche, yet responsible tourism. Biodiversity assessments have revealed more than 100 bird species, 100 butterfly species and more than 200 species of moths in Mawmluh village. The conservation efforts of the Mawmluh Nature Guides have led them to be be awarded the Silver Award by Outlook Responsible Tourism Awards, Meghalaya, 2025 in Sustainable Leadership: Nature Conservation Category.
