Gobuk

Gobuk, Upper Siang, Arunachal Pradesh

The Siang River, which originates in Tibet (where it is called the YarlungTsangpo River), flows south through Arunachal Pradesh, before it flows southwesterly into Assam, where it is called the Brahmaputra. In Arunachal Pradesh, the Siang River flows through land primarily inhabited by the Adi tribe, who revere the river. For the Adi tribe, the Siang River is a symbol of power and energy, and only the animistic Adi God, ‘Donyi-Polo’, has the power to make it flow or stop. Both banks of the river are home to some amazing forest and biodiversity. The Mouling National Park is on the river’s west bank. Community forest abounds in all areas on either bank of the river.
Titli Trust is working with the Adi tribe at Gobuk village in Upper Siang District, supporting them to reduce hunting, document their biodiversity and initiate nature-linked tourism in a responsible manner. This project, supported by Royal Enfield (Social Mission), was initiated in 2022. EpumSirum, a local NGO, has supported the conservation and livelihood program. They have successfully conducted the 1st and 2nd Siang Biodiversity Meet in 2024 and 2025 as well as bird and butterfly nature tours, helping establish the Upper Siang landscape as a biodiversity hotspot. Biodiversity assessments have revealed more than 325 bird species, 375 butterfly species and more than 750 species of moths in the Upper Siang landscape. Two papers have been published in international peer-reviewed journals listing 20 moth species that had not been recorded previously in India.
